Madeira is a Portuguese archipelago in southwest Portugal, north of the Canaries and west of Morocco. The capital of Madeira is Funchal on the south coast of the main island of the archipelago. Its population is estimated at a maximum of 300,000 inhabitants.
The Madeira archipelago includes the islands of Madeira, Porto Santo, and the Desertas and is visited by tourists all year round at a rate of about one million per year. The region is known for its Madeira wine, flora and fauna and landscapes, including the Laurel Forest, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Concerning the yacht charters, the main port is Funchal. Funchal is a modern city, located in a natural volcanic amphitheatre. The neighbourhoods and streets rise to almost 1,200 metres.
During your boat charter to discover the islands of Madeira such as Porto Santo, Desertas and Selvagens you may have the pleasure of watching whales and dolphins such as the common dolphin, striped dolphin, short-beaked dolphin, Bryde's whale, Sei whale, fin whale or even Sperm whales.
Climate
Madeira benefits from a mediterranean climate, but there are some clear climate variations between the north and the south, as well as differences from one island to the next. The climate is strongly influenced by the Gulf Stream which keeps the temperature mild throughout the year, with an average of about 20°C annually.
